The Omaha riverfront’s solo Riverfront Place condo tower is about to get its partner.

Friday, the City of Omaha said construction of the second Riverfront Place tower is moving forward and will mean a detour for up to two years on the riverfront trail.

Loretta Carroll, a spokeswoman for the project, said Boyd Jones Construction Co. has been chosen as the contractor and is starting site preparation. A groundbreaking is expected to take place later in October, she said.

Construction is expected to take 21 months.

The city chose the two-tower project in 2003 to take up six acres of riverfront property.

The first tower was finished in 2006, but construction on phase two has been set aside as the developers marketed the units in the second tower and worked on financing.

Riverfront Place holds a prime spot between the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge and the Gallup campus. It’s that portion of the trail that will close.

The second tower will have 53 units, 15 stories and cost $29.1 million.

Carroll said the condos in the second tower are more than 50 percent sold.

Carroll said the developers are still working out financing details but anticipate finalizing that later this month.
